Say what?

Is anyone else as completely unprepared and caught off guard by the impending holiday season as I am? Oh my gosh. How can Christmas be just weeks away at this point? Seems like just yesterday we were lounging at the beach, soaking up the sun, and then school started with all its chaos and now this. Ee gad time is really flying.

As I begin to think about and envision our holiday this year, I'm hoping (as usual) to instill some values into it. I certainly don't want it to be all about toys, toys, toys. Anyone ever notice how often those big ticket items sit collecting dust for much of the year after their big arrival in December? Like most parents however, we've got to figure out the balancing act. Let's face it... it is fun to get and give toys and kids love to play with them. However if the holiday isn't about more than that, it becomes one more thing that makes our children materialistic.

And so I'm left to ponder the best way to celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas in a meaningful way with our family. I'll keep you posted.

  1. I'm already thinking about this even though we're not parents yet. How do you stem the tide of greed, when it pours in from all directions?

I've already decided that when our kids are old enough to understand, I want to add an element of community service to the holidays. Buying food for the food bank. Buying toys for the kids in need. Stuff like that.

I, too, can't believe that Christmas is practically upon us. I also can't believe that Home Depot was playing nothing but Christmas music last night when we were there. ONE HOLIDAY AT A TIME, PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Oh, I SO know what you mean! My cats are such brats this time of year, fighting over the PetSmart catolog and all I hear is "I want this, and this and this!" Geez. I just can't wait till they move off to college.

Seriously though, bravo to you for recognizing the need to have balance.

Speaking of Christmas presents though...I'm buying myself a camera and love the photos you post. What kind of camera do you use?

    You mean it's almost Christmas?

I'm still dealing with Halloween candy over here. Don't go complicating things on me.
