New Year, New You?

The last vestiges of Christmas are all but gone (these bunnies were given to my lovely young nieces. There is a third bunny with a K on her tummy but I'd already wrapped her before taking this photo).

With the Christmas holiday out of the way, I've had lots of time to think (dangerous for me I realize). I'd love to know what other people think about New Year's Resolutions. I never plan to make 'em, don't even think about 'em in any way until that quiet down time between Christmas and New Year's Eve.
Of course with sickness running through our house and my immune system down yet again, I start thinking about the big issues in life (and unfortunately for me I think about the negatives when I'm sick... so I have to really work at turning that around).
With 2008 looming just hours away, my thoughts keep returning to 2007 ... what I achieved (or didn't), how I feel about my life and where it is headed, etc., etc.
I realize as I grapple with aging, that I also need to live a long life to be with my children and so ... if not for myself, then for them I need to turn some things around -- keep growing and improving if you will.
And so part of me wants to make a New Year's Resolution list (published or unpublished) that would go something like this:
  • Finally get our lives in some semblance of order (new calendar, family notebook, etc.),
  • Get in shape, exercising regularly,

  • Finally get a working budget ... well... working,

  • Hone our parenting skills and make our family even better than it is,

  • Hone my own thinking skills and finally help my brain work better too!

Now just about anyone could see that that list is just setting me up for a letdown in the new year. Who could do all that? But on the other hand, if I don't make myself the best healthiest me that I can, am I not letting my children down? Lofty thoughts when zillions of folks will just get drunk tonight and lay around with a hangover tomorrow.

So... do you do the resolutions or do you not? To resolve or not to resolve, and how much, that my friends is the question. And by the way, resolutions or no, glad I know ya and Happy New Year 2008 to you and yours!

  1. I do resolutions every year, but never, well, resolutely, as they are usually broken within a few short weeks and I don't think much of it.

2007 was the year I was going to get it all together - my health, my finances, my house. That may have been a bit much for one resolution, LOL!

I am a few pounds lighter than I was in January, so I guess that's a step in the right direction.

Our finances were rolling along splendidly, until we lost all semblance of sanity and took out the gihugic truck loan.

The house, well, I spent the last weekend of 2007 organizing the sewing and craft stuff, so I guess that's saying something.

But this year I resolve not to make a resolution. I'm going to wing it, and see what happens. I think I generally try to point my feet in a positive direction, so I'll hang for a year and see what happens.

  2. I wish I would only make resolutions just once a year but alas I seem to be changing what I need to work on all year long. Exhausting at times but as life doesn't ever stay the same, it seems like there's always some tweeking needed in my life.

I love your list though and will take your list for myself since my computer at home is being fixed by the Geek Squad. I'm not ashamed to say I'm praying those Geekers can recover my pictures!!!!

    Happiest of New Years!!!!

  3. My transformation into the "new me" began a while ago I am competing in a triathlon im April, I got my MFA, I'm embarking on what I hope will be a path that leads me to my next career, and I start Nutri-system on January 2nd (so I don't have to drag this huge butt around the desert during the triathlon). If I change anymore, I'll need to go transgender.

No real "resolutions" per se, except to keep doing what I'm doing in terms of training, writing and growing.

Best of 2008 to you, Scott and the munchkins.

    XOXO

Yes! We do resolutions. Our tradition yearly is to get together with good friend Amy, her three kids and our two, all between the ages 7 - 13. The kids get along famously, and the adults play board games. I make special resolution stationary, and all together we talk about what we would like to accomplish, and we try to be very specific. One of mine last year was for our family to find a new church, and we did!

We also try to put in a funny one too. Amy's one year was to be a able to do a backbend from a standing position!

Have fun with it, and Happy New year!
