What a Shot Wednesday

So sorry that I haven't blogged since Sunday. My mother arrived for her yearly visit to us and our week at the coast. Between that and working, I haven't been able to find the time.

Tonight however, I'm sharing a photo I've always enjoyed. This shot of beautiful silk purses was taken on a visit to the wonderful Seattle Pike Place Market. I just love the colors and the close in focus purses with the ones in the back that are softer and out of focus.

A little surprised I didn't buy one of these beauties.

If you really liked purses, you can probably never have too many. I'm generally a 1 or 2 bag person -- one in black and one in brown -- but honestly I may change that and get a little more fun in my purse choices. If you love purses, a good place to follow trends is the Purse Blog. Look at this lockable Gucci handbag:

It sure is pretty and it looks very durable. I love the lockability although I can totally imagine locking my self OUT of my own purse, misplacing my key!

And luckily for me, I just can't even imagine paying whatever price this purse tends to sell for... so I'm safe. I can love it without needing or being able to purchase it!

And if you just enjoy color and interestingly wonderful photography, check out the Photo Hab blog where there are literally explosions of color caught on film!

I need some sleep so I bid you adieu! Let me know what you think of the purses and the explosions of color too!

Ciao for now,

Mama Picture This Does Last Thursday - First Time Ever!

Yes - we see you.
The crowd gets bigger.

It gets dark and the crow gets bigger still
(but I didn't remember to change to night setting on my camera).

It ends with LOVE!

Studio Sunday - What's in the studio now?

The studio is filling up with things this week as I prepare for my first ever attempt to sell at a street fair.

Portland, Oregon has a tradition of a fairly formal First Friday which kicks off art exhibits throughout the studios of our fair city. In contrast, the funky and far less traditional Last Thursday in NE Portland combines some art gallery openings along with street art and food vendors.

I am taking several of my mounted art photo pieces which only needed to be priced and bagged. I'm not taking the larger prints just for ease of set up.

In addition, I have made photo light switch covers and am in process with a handful of double-thick glass magnets. The floral images were a given, but Bat Penny -- now that is something new -- in magnet form.
Check out the magnet making tutorial here.

I'm currently working on printing out and putting together a selection of photo cards for Thursday as well. I am printing out some that are already in the shop and a few that have never been. Come to Last Thursday and maybe you can see them for yourself!

And when I'm done with all that, here is my stack of wood for wedding signs. I have 6 5x10's to make as well as a couple of larger ones that can be used during ceremonies.
Now that you've seen what's in my studio tonight, I thought I'd share a few other artists and what is in their studio too. I love checking out what others are doing -- it is inspirational and fun. Here is a peek into the studio of Cheryl Grant, an illustrator in Virginia.  Check out what's in her studio currently by clicking on the link below:

Illustrated by Cheryl Blog

And for a change of pace, check out the website of local Portland, Oregon artist (and Mama) Jolyn Fry: http://www.jolynfry.com/.  This may not be her studio but you can get a feel for the beautiful art she creates. Check out these artists and maybe, just maybe stop by Last Thursday. We'd love to see you! And last but not least...
Here's something going in my house, but not my studio. Poor kitty is trying to adjust to the loss of her beloved couch (replaced by two leather chairs), but somehow I think she'll make it!

Self Improvement Saturday - 10 Things to Improve Your Life Right Now!

Saturdays always seem like a great day to get everything done, until of course I run out of time. Maybe if I was more organized or purposeful or made a list of "some" of the things that need to be done and commit to doing them before Sunday, maybe that would work.

Saturdays also seem like a perfect day to try to do better to improve on myself as it were.  Now I just let you in on the fact that despite by best attempts, I pretty much never get everything that "should" get done on Saturday actually done - on Saturday (sometimes not even on Sunday). Knowing this, I am spending a few minutes searching the Internet for some ideas to help me (and you if you'd like) improve my life and my self -- well right away!

Here's a few of the things that I have found:

Things to Improve Your Life Right Now!

1. Have a set place where you ALWAYS put your keys (and your cell phone).
I hang my keys on a hook and use my cell phone as my alarm clock - it helps!

2. Leave work at work
I need to work on this one - no work email at home. I like to be helpful and efficient
at work but need to remember to safeguard my home time too.

3. Clean off your desk or work space.
Although it is often hard to find the time for those of us who weren't born with the
naturally fastidious and organized genes, finding a way to keep things clean and tidy
at your home and/or work space does make you feel better and work better too.
Every once in awhile, just take a few minutes and give it a try. There are some great ideas on the best ways to set up and organize your desk at Life Hacker

4. Create a morning routine.
This is less important right now with Summer break upon us, but for my family it is
going to be imperative come fall if we want to be successful. We have a school year
routine in the mornings, just not a good one. I am committing to working on this bit-
by-bit to make improvements and a plan to implement when the time comes. Making
my meals the night before and showering then too would be major improvements.

5. Laugh more and often (and right now for no reason).
I just did it and you can too! I was afraid to laugh out loud as a teenager for fear my
laugh would be the funny thing. But these days, one of the benefits of gaining wisdom
with age... I laugh a lot more and a lot louder. Who cares what others think. I know
laughing (as long as it isn't at some one's expense) is a great thing to do! Great article
on the importance of humor here by Dr. Terry Gordon

6. Keep on dreaming.
I have been in the same job for over 11 years now and I enjoy it but I also enjoy and
feel revitalized by my dream of having my own business creating and selling my photo
art. I think it is the thing that is truly making me happy and feeling alive these days.
You can still live the life you are living but have some dreams to reach for too!

7. Stay connected.
Whether you are partial to phone calls or emails, hand written letters, note cards
or social networking -- find and remember the people you care about. It is easy to
brighten your day and someone elses by picking up the phone or sending a card to let
them know you are thinking about them in the mail.

8. Hug someone - often.
I hug my kids regularly throughout the day and plan to continue doing so until they just
won't allow it. I admit my hubby and I used to hug at the end of the work day with a
special lift me off the ground kinda hug. Just now thinking we should get back to it.

9. Single-task once in awhile.
Take the time to slow down and really concentrate on whatever task is at hand every
so often. Really focus on washing those dishes, or mowing that grass. Get into the
rhythm of what you are doing and stay purposefully focused. You don't have to multi-
    task all the time.

10. Try to embrace yourself as you are as well as how you wish to be.
Do whatever helps you to love yourself. It is important for you and for those around
you too. And you don't have to accept that you will always be just as you are. You
can also embrace that you are a work of art that is evolving and ever changing.

Thankful Thursday

It is Thankful Thursday and I am thankful indeed. I am thankful first and foremost today for my Mama without whom I would not be here! Happy Birthday Mom!

I am thankful for my husband who allows me to pursue my dream and my photo art because I love it and he loves me ;-)

I am thankful for my Etsy customers (you know who you are)!

Because I love you all for supporting me, I will be sending out a Customer Appreciation Coupon Code later today!

Be on the lookout.

I am thankful to have finally found a Mama Blog to try advertising my Etsy shop.

You would be surprised at just how many I contacted only to find out they were uber expensive or they never got back to me.

But with the help of a site called Passion Fruit, my ad should begin to run tomorrow on June 21st on That Suburban Momma Blog

I hope you will check out the ad and her blog too.

I suppose I should make breakfast now and officially start preparing for my Thursday/Friday (I get a 3-day weekend all summer long)!

Ciao for now,

It's Self Improvement Saturday: 10 ways to lift your mood

I've been thinking since yesterday just the heck what to post on Self Improvement Saturday (today)! At first I thought I'll do something such as write a few pages in my novel and let people know I did it. I still might do that but honestly it's pretty boring to anyone but me. And so I decided to make a list!

In this case, I'm going to give out some ideas on Self-Improvement Saturdays probably most of the time. You can take 'em or leave 'em. You can save them or share them...whatever floats your boat.

As someone who has struggled for years with bouts of depression, I am often trying to figure out how to improve my mood. All of us have our ups and downs. And to be honest, while I'm feeling down for those folks affected by the awful Oklahoma (and other states) tornadoes in the last little while, it is hard to be in anything but a good mood in Portland, Oregon today as it is our 2nd sunny warm-ish day in a row! It is just beautiful out.

But back to the task at hand, which is:

10 ways to lift your mood*

  1. Get outside:  If it is sunny and warm, all the better but even a good walk in the rain could improve your mood -- just don't stay in bed all day.
  2. Treat yourself: to a treat. Head for your nearest Baskin & Robbins or DQ, or make some cookies. If sweets aren't your thing, have something that is.
  3. Play some music: Preferably loud. Find some tunes that remind you of middle or high school or any good time of your life. Or just turn up your favorite radio station.
  4. Reread your favorite book: or go find a new one. For me it would be "A Room with A View."
  5. Watch some TV: Get out of bed and on to the couch. Find a great TV series (on Netflix, Hulu or at the video store) to immerse yourself in for awhile to get out of your own thoughts and worries. I have had great days enjoying episode after episode of "Doc Martin," "Psych," "The West Wing," "Without a Trace" and "Golden Girls."
  6. Hang with animals:  Snuggle up with your favorite cat or take your pooch to the dog park. If you don't have your own pets, try to visit a friend who does.
  7. Take yourself to the movie: I have often done this one for my own birthday when everyone is working and I've taken the day off. Go see what you want, when you want and enjoy!
  8. Play: It isn't just for kids. Get on your bike, skateboard or lace up some skates. Better yet head for the local park and swing on the swings -- with abandon!
  9. Smile: Whether you feel like it or not and no matter what you are doing, even if it is just hanging out in bed playing on the computer. It tricks your brain into thinking you are happier than you are. Fake it 'til you make it ;-)
  10. Sing: Probably not "Swing Low Sweet Chariot."  Go for something upbeat and even a little quirky. Some of my favorites are Christmas carols any time of the year (especially in Summer) and things like "Come On, Get Happy" by the Partridge Family and "Walking on Sunshine" by Katrina & the Waves!

*If nothing is working and you are still feeling persistently down and seriously depressed, you may need to talk to a therapist or medical doctor and/or get medication. If for any reason you are considering harming yourself or someone else, call 911, visit any emergency room or call 1-800-273-TALK (8255) for help right away.
You matter. Please take care of yourself!

Now go and enjoy the day!

More thoughts on getting older (& better)

My last post was one about aging and acceptance. I have always struggled to adjust to the big birthday (you know the ones... they end in 0's).

It started during the beginning of my 29th year. I spent that year telling everyone that I was 30 years old to which they would reply, "you are still 29." It has been my style to start processing a year ahead of time and then by the time it was ACTUALLY my birthday, I was all good and ready to go!

Turning 50 (or approaching it) has been the hardest of them all by far. Interestingly, for the most part I have tried to ignore it as if it would go away. Of course it has not. It shall arrive in less than 2 weeks. I continue to process this milestone.

Forcing myself to say it out loud and to type it seems to be helping. Rather than trying to be the cool lady/mom whom everyone thinks is actually younger than she is, I'm trying to focus on just being my own version of cool. Don't let me kid you, at this point in my progression, I'd really LOVE to hear a bunch of "No way! You can't be 50!"'s but if it doesn't happen, I'm trying not to care too much. I still disdain being called "Mam." I know that it is supposed to be a gesture at respect but hint here people, most women in "middle age" aren't fond of it -- not one bit.

Regarding my last post, I did say that I didn't have a lot of time to research people I actually admire and then listed some celebrities who are turning anywhere from 50 - 60 this year. Most people seemed fine with my list but I did get a little negative feedback when I shared it with a group of my Facebook Friends who are all women in this age range (or getting close). To be honest I a) appreciate the feedback and b) understand where it came from and why. Good points related to women looking up to other women who are "meeting their age with grace, ferocity, and determination.

If you have women you admire who are over 50, who are they and what about them do you admire?

Here are a just a few of my own favorites:

Here's a quiz. Can you name them? Do you know their age? What about them might I admire?

Feel free to comment on these wonderful women and/or share your own favorites below. What does aging gracefully mean to you? Do you care if a woman colors her hair? I know I don't. Color - don't color. I say that's your choice. I do like Ellen DeGeneres even if she chooses to color her hair. And as to why I included pictures of Daniel Day Lewis and Johnny Depp along with her in my last post I say this: I enjoy looking at them! I may be getting older but I'm not yet dead!

Getting older (and better)

I for one am not a big fan of aging, but truly there is no choice.

And if you are reading this and thinking how strange this all sounds because you are in your teens or twenties or even maybe your thirties, trust me when I say that one day (not as far off as it currently seems) you will wake up and feel like your life is a Talking Heads song!

As part of the acceptance process, it is helping me to know my many friends from college in particular but High School as well who are right there with me within a year or two.

I am reading a book on my Kindle reader called "50 Ways to Enjoy Turning Fifty" and part of the acceptance piece is finding people in their 50's who you admire.

I don't have enough time today to do a lot of research but I have found a bunch of cool famous folk who range from 50-60 to make me feel better about where I'm at. If these cool people can be this age, well then I can manage it too.

59: Oprah Winfrey                   & John Malkovich
58: Reba McIntire                     & Annie Lennox
57: Whoopi Goldberg                & Johnny Rotten
56: Daniel Day-Lewis & Chris Isaak
55: Ellen DeGeneres & Sheila E.
54: Prince (shares my birthday) & Joan Jett
53: Valerie Bertinelli & Bono
52: Colin Firth (love) & John Taylor (love)!
51: John Bon Jovi & John Corbett (need I say more)
50: Jodie Foster & Jon Stewart
49: John Stamos & Johnny Depp
Not bad company at all. Not at all. Now a quick reminder that only 3 people have actually participated in my birthday blog contest and I find that well -- unacceptable. I love my friends and the readers of this blog and I would like to see you post even just one time in honor of my reaching this milestone. You have just 15 days to GET 'ER DONE!

As a reminder, the rules (as easy as they are) can be found here: http://mamapicturethis.blogspot.com/2013/05/blog-birthday-comment-contest.html

Go now. Comment often. Make my day and my year ;-)

Blog Birthday Comment Contest

As you may know, or may have noticed, I have a big birthday coming up. Despite my best attempts to hate this particular birthday year, I am actively working at ways to make it great.

I don't know about you, but I feel WAY younger than I am. And while age is just a number, they can wreak havoc with our emotional state until we adjust. If we allow them to, they can even send us into a deep depressionary spiral and ruin our year. But we are the only ones who can choose whether to wallow in self-pity or to celebrate ourselves in all our glory at whatever age we happen to be.

What is life without celebrations?

We all know just what life is if we aren't getting older.

And on a somewhat somber note, those of us celebrating big birthdays should remember that not every one is so lucky to get the chance.

And so ... despite how much it pains me to type these words, I am actively working toward being FABULOUSLY FIFTY! Can it be? Not me! But alas tis true.

In honor of this momentous occasion that is coming all too soon (see my birthday countdown calendar to the right of your screen), I am having a Blog Birthday Comment Contest!

The rules are easy:

1. Comment on the Mama Picture This blog between now and June 6th
2. Share the blog post that includes your comment ... on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest
3. You are automatically entered in a random drawing on my birthday (June 7th)
4. Winner receives a t-shirt & 4-pack of photo cards (you choose the photos)
5. 2 Runners up win an 8x10 (or 8x8) photo print of their choosing!

*** In addition, I will donate 5% of every sale in my shop between now and my birthday to Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (in honor of my Dad).

Happy Big Birthday to Me... and to you too!
Help me to make it a great one!

I am counting on all of you (you know who you are) who read the blog but rarely if ever comment to comment and spread the word far and wide! Without your help, this contest will fizzle... but with your help it will be FABULOUS!

10 Ways to Celebrate a Big Birthday without Breaking the Bank

If you are having a big birthday and want to celebrate without breaking the bank, there are still some great things you can do to mark the occasion.
1.  Get a tattoo
While a large or elaborate tattoo can set you back hundreds of dollars, you can often get a smaller one for under $100.
2. Pierce something
Never gotten your ears pierced? Do it now. Looking for something more adventurous, consider your upper ear or nose. I got my nose pierced just last year and it cost about $50 including jewelry.
3. Manicure/Pedicure
Want to go wild and spend a bit more? You can do
both manicure and pedicure together. Save money
and just pick the one that makes you feel extra
        special.
4. Cut & Color
If you are anything like me, you don't cut your hair as often as you might like. A good hair cut can make you feel great so go for it. If you can spend a little extra go for some color. I always color my own hair but this year am splurging for both a new cut and a little fun color -- something I don't normally do.
5. Shopping
The nice thing about taking yourself shopping (in stores or online) is that you are in charge and you can buy anything from a whole new outfit to a new piece of jewelry at the local resale shop or even some sparkly new nail polish to do your own nails.
I know I'd like to spend my next birthday on an island in the Pacific or in Europe but this year it isn't going to happen. And that's o.k. My birthday celebration (and yours as well) can be special even on a budget.

Happy Birthday to You! Make sure you find a way to honor just how wonderful you are even if it can't be elaborate. And while you are at it... consider figuring out ways to celebrate all year long throughout the year. You deserve it!

New Beginnings

Today I have been thinking about beginnings.

I know two women who are past their due dates and soon to meet their new babies.

At my office, we have been interviewing and are soon to add a new person to our development team.

My husband has been interviewing and is likely to be starting a new position soon as well.

Summer is just weeks away and that means a new nanny and a new season and a new schedule.
https://www.etsy.com/listing/151121579/kids-personalized-sign-custom-name?ref=shop_home_active

New seems to be on the agenda.
I am also trying out some new items for the shop.

Today I posted a special order listing -- an upcycled sign for a teen girl's bedroom door -- personalized just for her! Considering offering as a regular listing. I am also trying to come up with one or more potential versions that might be more popular with young guys.

And when it comes to new beginnings, what better than a wedding or civil ceremony?

Add caption

Continuing the scrabble motif, I've been thinking about the possibilities of a similar treatment for bridal/wedding ceremony signs. It seems all the rage these days to include signs for your ceremony, such as Mr. and Mrs., The Bride and The Groom, Here Comes the Bride and Happily Ever After.

Are you a bride to be? A member of an upcoming wedding? Mother of the bride? I'd love to get feedback as I move along in this process. And speaking of feedback and moving forward, I spent a little time today making and

packaging up my latest photo note card order and they are ready to head out for California tomorrow! Thanks to Amanda Jayne for the order. Check out her adorable crocheted items in her Etsy shop here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/MsAmandaJayne

I think I'm making it an early night tonight! More tomorrow.

Wonderful Floral Weather

When the weather turns warm and sunny, I find myself thinking about gardens and spring flowers.

I took this shot yesterday while experimenting with one of my favorites that is blooming in our yard:

For those of you who might be wondering, it is not currently available in my shop, but I suppose it could be. If you'd like to see this lovely little pink bloom in the shop, please vote by leaving a comment below or voting in the poll at the upper right of the blog.

Ironically I also got a sale in the shop yesterday for Mother's Day and it just happens to be a floral image as well.

Excited to say that a personalized "Sea of Orange" card will soon be making it's way to Oklahoma to make someone's day (or course it isn't Jennifer!)  Check out the listing here: https://www.etsy.com/listing/150165983/personalized-4x5-photo-note-card-sea-of?ref=shop_home_active

And last but definitely not least, if you are in the Portland, Oregon area, you should totally check out Rose Hill Flower Farm. You can order a bouquet subscription and I'd highly recommend it. What a lovely idea and what lovely flowers! Check out the farm's website here: http://www.rosehillflowerfarm.com/

I hope some day to be lucky enough to get to go and take some photos of them all in bloom. You can also follow the farm on Facebook! I hope you stop to notice the flowers today! I know I will.

Check back tomorrow when I hope to be talking about personalized signs for kids and weddings and more!

Tutorial - How I Make My Backgrounds for Listings

Since I started re-shooting my listings for the shop (at least the card ones so far), and had some interest in the process, here is a brief tutorial (if you will) on setting up and taking listing photos for my shop. Here's an old listing: https://www.etsy.com/listing/68167526/bleedings-hearts-blank-card-mini-set-of?ref=shop_home_active

1. I started with the top of our refrigerator
2. Add a fairly neutral but beautiful art paper with magnets
3. Add a photo note card (magnet hidden inside)
4. Add an envelope (tuck behind card - with or without magnet
5. I added a branch for a little interest and perspective
6. Zoom in and finish!

I hope you have enjoyed peeking inside my creative process. I like the results but would be interested in hearing your opinion as well. I am weighing whether or not to use this same backdrop presentation in some way for my photo prints. Check out the actual listing in the shop... https://www.etsy.com/listing/67386771/photo-note-card-sunflower-photo-card?ref=shop_home_active

I hope you'll share your thoughts in a comment below!
